Mandolins

walnut custom front

I make three variations of mandolin, a 353mm, 20 fret Mandolin, tuned GDAE, a 420mm, 20 fret Tenor, tuned CGDA and a 530mm, 21 fret Octave, tuned GDAE

All instruments are in the Portuguese flat back style, and have solid tone wood tops combined with scalloped and tapered bracing. The bracing is always Spruce on the belly side and Mahogany on the back.

The neck to body joint is of the ‘Slipper-heel’ through-neck construction. This is a far superior and more reliable joint than the commonly found dovetail method, whilst the sound hole shape is usually my signature style but can be elliptical, round or heart shaped.

Bindings to the sides and back joints are of a contrasting wood, i.e. Walnut bindings with a Maple instrument. I never use plastic bindings which are now common on even very expensive instruments. Bridges can be either a solid exotic wood i.e. snake wood or a laminated type as shown on the home page

High quality Schaller or Rubner tuning machines are fitted as standard, and all instruments are finished in Danish Oil. This oiled finish results in a beautiful low sheen, and has the added advantage of being easily repaired if the instrument is ever scuffed or scratched.

The price for a 353mm 20 fret mandolin would be typically £550, and by clicking the images below you can see further examples of my work.
